Rhinos & Rhododendrons

Taking an alternative approach to a classic Nepal combination, this journey contrasts the heady and hectic streets of Kathmandu with the open savannah of Chitwan National Park. Slow down to search for tigers and rhinos amid the wilderness, before strapping up your boots for a light trek between two atmospheric lodges in the Himalayan foothills around Pokhara. Travelling between this handful of Nepal’s headline destinations by road rather than air keeps the journeys more sustainable, and creates those extra sparks of spontaneity which can turn a good trip into an outstanding one.

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1-3

Kathmandu, Nepal’s historic capital, is an intoxicating feast for the senses. The scent of incense mingles with heady spices and fuggy scooter exhaust, while merchants shout to make themselves heard above the beeping of motorbike horns. Cars and pedestrians share space with cows in streets lined with ancient temples and internet cafes. It’s an all-engrossing whirlwind of ancient-meets-modern, so be prepared for a sensory overload!

DAY 4-6

Chitwan National Park
Covering an area of nearly 1,000 square kilometres at the foot of the Himalayas, Chitwan is Nepal’s flagship National Park. Recognised as a biodiversity hotspot, its forests, grassland and rivers are home to over 65 species of mammal, 120+ varieties of fish, and more than 500 species of bird - one of the highest concentrations of birdlife in the world. The park’s most famous residents are the elusive Bengal tigers that lurk in the deeper forests, and the endangered greater one-horned rhino, which (with an experienced tracker as your guide) you’ll have a good chance of sighting.

DAY 7-8

Drive to Pokhara. Undoubtedly one of Nepal’s most photogenic cities, laid-back, lake-side Pokhara is backed by spectacular views of the ruggedly-beautiful Annapurna mountains. It sits on a historic trade route between India and Tibet and, until the mid-1960s, was only accessible via a two-week trek from Kathmandu. Mule trains can sometimes still be seen walking the old paths, laden with trade goods from remote regions of the Himalayas. In recent years, Pokhara has become the adventure sports capital of Nepal, offering world-class paragliding and white-water rafting, as well as being a major starting point for treks into the Annapurnas. Stay at the Pavilions, set on an organic farm in Pokhara, with excellent eco credentials, this is a serene place to spend a couple of nights soaking up the bucolic mountain scenery.

DAY 9-10

Dust off your walking boots and set off for the satellite sister camp - Pavilions Himalayas Lakeview. It's a glorious 3-4 hour hike across some spectacular scenery taking in rhododendron carpeted slopes, picturesque peaks, low-lying lakes, and small villages before you arrive on the shores of Lake Phewa for a very special two night stay...what a spectacular and memorable way to end your time in Nepal.

DAY 11
