Red Panda Expedition

Journey to Tinchule-Singalila in the remote Eastern Himalaya, one of the best places to see the elusive Red Panda.

Singalila Ridge (7,000 - 12,000 feet) straddles the Nepal/India border. You will based at a tiny homestay on the Nepal side for 5 nights with the Singalila National Park, West Bengal, India within easy reach. Sandakhphu top, within the park, is the highest peak in West Bengal. Sandakphu offers the best view of Kangchenjunga (also known as Sleeping Buddha or Sleeping Shiva).

As well as being prime habitat for red pandas, the forest is also home to clouded leopard, black panther, golden cat, marbled cat, Himalayan black bear, martins, weasels, flying squirrels, false cobra, Himalayan salamander, and some of the most exotic eastern Himalayan birds.

Flora includes 650 varieties of orchids, rhododendrons, endemic cobra lilies, magnolias, oaks, maple, pines, bamboos, wild kiwi (a red panda favourite), strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry and cherry and numerous other species.

You'll be staying at Habre's Nest homestay. Habre's Nest shares 20% of its profit for the conservation of the Red Panda and its habitat.

When you're not out exploring you can drink in the views - four of the highest Himalayan peaks can be seen in a single frame from the village and sunrises and sunsets are magical - enjoy tea on the verandah or a little tipple around the fire at the Roosting Kuna (bar/lounge).

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1

Kathmandu
Arrive in Kathmandu. On your arrival, after clearing customs, you will be met by our representative and escorted to your hotel. Kathmandu is the largest city and the capital and heart of Nepal. Legend tells us the valley of Kathmandu was a turquoise lake with a wondrous lotus flower resting on it. Manjushree (Padmasambav), a patriarch saint from China sliced the valley wall with his flaming sword of wisdom at Chovar and let the dry land appear. The lotus flower settled on the valley floor over which Manjushree built the great stupa of Swayambhunath. The Kathmandu valley comprises the three ancient Royal cities of Patan, Bhaktapur and Kathmandu having their own palaces and ornate palace squares each listed as World Heritage sites. There are cobbled lanes of the palace squares with a fascinating maze of temples, shrines, market places and the life revolving around it.

DAY 2

Kathmandu to Tinchule-Singalila
You will be transferred to the airport for your flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. Your onward journey to Habre's Nest in the tiny, remote village of Tinchule in Nepal is spectacular, and takes around 5 hrs by road (4x4 Bolero). Both the Tinchule Forest, Nepal and adjacent Singalila National Park, India offer the perfect habitat for red pandas (with 32 wild red pandas recorded in the immediate area) as well as a host of other species. The scenery is jaw-dropping.

Habre's Nest
Enjoy the early morning views of the Himalayas with a steaming cup of tea and wonderful birding until breakfast at 8.30am. Activities here are focused on exploring the broadleaf montane rain forest habitat which surrounds the homestay, and seeing the flora and fauna. All the trackers will be out looking for signs of red pandas during daylight hours and the team will be ready to mobilise the heritage Land Rovers quickly to see them should a sighting be reported. For time spent at home, there is a wonderful 'Bird Studio' providing excellent opportunities to watch the elusive Himalayan birds. The bird hide has hosted around 50 different species over the years. Parrotbills, Fulvettas, Laughingthrushes Yellow throated Martine visit often. Lunch is served at 1.30 pm, with the clouds usually rolling in soon after - a perfect time for reading or a little siesta. Afternoon activities start at 3.30 pm.
