India - Unspoilt Kerala

This is a classic private tour of Kerala a wonderful region in south west India but staying in peaceful, unspoilt locations and handpicked characterful accommodation throughout. You start in the colonial coastal town of Cochin where you stay in a lovely boutique hotel in the heart of the old Fort Cochi.

You then head up into the green hills of the Western Ghats where you will be staying in the award winning Spice Tree. Here there is no television, instead you can sit and admire the incredible views down across the surrounding landscape. This is the place to unwind and relax with herbal teas and spa treatments surrounded by wonderful scenery.

You then make your way to the world famous Periyar Wildlife Reserve home to tigers and bears and plenty of other species to numerous to mention. You stay very close by at the Spice Village where you can wake to the sounds of monkeys playing in the forest and plenty of wildlife in the lush gardens of this hotel. Guests stay in individual bungalows dotted about the gardens.

Your next destination are the famous canals and backwaters of Kerala. You stay at Coconut Lagoon in Kumarakom right in the heart of the canals; in fact you can only get there by boat! You will spend a day on a traditional kettuvallam or rice barge gently heading down river watching the wildlife and the world go by while your crew cook lunch and do all the hard work for you.

Finally you will head to the unspoilt beach at Marari, an undiscovered gem of a place. A stunning white sandy beach lined by palm trees and still used by local fisherman, this is the place for relaxing and exploring. You won't find any facilities on the beach here; no watersports or beach bars. It truly is unspoilt by tourism and gives you a real insight into the authentic Keralan way of life which has remained untouched for centuries. A fantastic way to end your holiday.

You visit the Periyar Wildlife Reserve which is home to many rare species including tigers and monkeys. The Real World Conservation Trust works with many different conservation charities such as Save the Rhino, Save the Elephant, Animals Saving Animals and African Parks.

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

On arrival at the airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Rest of day at leisure. The following day you have a full day tour of Cochin. A true melting pot in every sense, Cochin or Kochi, is one of the most dynamic, vibrant and energetic cities in South India. One of the most important trading posts on the Spice Route, Cochin sports several vestiges of its multi-cultural past – Chinese fishing nets mingle with Dutch Palaces, Sephardic Synagogues and Portuguese forts – all jostling for space along the shores of the Arabian Sea. Today, Cochin has a thriving arts and cultural scene and hosts the Cochin Biennale – a major art event in Asia, every winter. Several galleries, boutiques, and artisanal restaurants stand cheek by jowl with one another, especially in the Fort Cochin area, while the spice, fish and antique markets continue to flourish side by side. In the evening you will enjoy a sunset cruise on Cochin harbour.

DAY 3 - 4

Upon arrival at Munnar check into the hotel. Rest of day to relax and you can enjoy an evening walk to Dolmens Hills. The picturesque little town of Munnar nestled amidst acres of sprawling tea estates and verdant forests, was once the summer retreat of the British Government in South India, and still has a colonial charm. Munnar’s rugged landscape offers good opportunities for walks and treks through the town and nearby villages. You then head out from Munnar to the Eravikulam National Park. This stretch of the Western Ghats is absolutely pristine and is situated at the base of the Anamudi Mountain, the highest peak south of the Himalayas measuring over 8000 ft! Eravikulam is a nature lover’s delight and was created with the specific purpose of preserving the natural environment of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, or mountain goat. The park is also a habitat for leopards, wild dogs, macaques and a vast number of birds. Eravikulam is also home to the startling blue kurunji flower that bloom only once every 12 years! The next bloom is expected in 2018.

DAY 5 - 6

You will take a leisurely drive to Periyar. In the afternoon take a Plantation walk. Once part of the legendry Silk Route, Kerala is famous for its exotic spices. In the evening you will take a walk through the bustling spice market of Kumily village in Thekkady. The following day you will explore Periyar. The very sound of the name conjures up images of elephants, unending chains of hills and spice scented plantations. Here, in the crisp, cool air of the Western Ghats, you will see the animals of this wild and the simple unsophisticated mountain region. Periyar National Park is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the Park. In the early morning take a guided Nature Walk in the Periyar National Park before you return to your hotel for a late Breakfast. The wildlife at Periyar includes elephants, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed macaques and sambar as well as numerous birdlife.
