India - Beyond the Golden Triangle

This private tour was put together by our India expert Lily for those of you wishing to combine a Golden Triangle tour with a safari. You start off exploring both Old and New Delhi with your own tour guide. Delhi is an exciting and vast city which is both historical and modern. It is not to be missed! You then head off to see the iconic Taj Mahal which still has the power to take your breath away despite being a very familiar sight. Then it's off to Ranthambore National Park where you will go on game drives and experience an Indian safari. Ranthambore is full of incredible wildlife but perhaps the most exciting is the elusive tiger. Finally you will explore the beautiful, historic city of Jaipur and the fabulous'y extravagant Palace of the Winds.

The NGO Tiger Watch organization is focused on the conservation and protection of wildlife in Ranthambore National Park. The national parks in India all do invaluable work protecting rare and endangered species and their habitats. This includes the rare one horned rhino, Asian elephants, Bengal tigers, leopards, black bear and many other species of deer, birds and smaller mammals. The Real World Conservation Trust works with many different conservation charities such as Save the Rhino, Save the Elephant, Animals Saving Animals and African Parks.

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3

On arrival in Delhi you will be met at the airport and transferred to your luxury hotel for the next few nights. The following day you will be taken out to explore Delhi on a private tour visiting New Delhi (India Gate, Parliament and the President's House) and Old Delhi (Jama Masjid, the Old City, Humayun's Tomb and the Red Fort) as well as on an exciting rickshaw ride.

This morning you will catch the train to Agra on a 2 hour journey. On arrival you will be met and taken on a tour around this ancient city. Agra served as capital for the Mughal Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries and flourished as a centre of art, drawing inspiration from Persian, Islamic, Turkish, Byzantine and Indian styles. It has been immortalized ever since by the Taj Mahal – a magnificent marble mausoleum that epitomises love, yet Agra has so many more monuments that tell a rich narrative of the tides and times of Man. You will visit: Agra Fort On the right bank of the Yamuna river, is one of the most important and robustly built stronghold of the Mughals, embellished with number of richly decorated buildings – the Agra Fort. Let your guide tell you the rich, evocative Mughal history of Agra Fort, where emperors like Babar, Humayun, Akbar, among other historic characters take centerstage. Itmad-ud-Daulah Follow the road less traveled with Itmad-ud-Daulah, a marble tomb built for the grandfather of Mumtaz (the queen interred at the Taj Mahal) also known as Baby Taj, is said to have inspired the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal (visit at sunset) Agra has been immortalized by Taj Mahal – the magnificent mausoleum, which the Emperor Shah Jahan had built for his queen, Mumtaz and India’s own jewel in the list of 7 Wonders of the Modern World. Let our storyteller guide weaves tales of Agra’s and the mausoleum, as also the romance between Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. Please note: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

DAY 5 - 6

Rise early and take a visit with your private guide to watch the sun rise over the Taj Mahal. Return to hotel for breakfast then depart from the hotel with packed lunch and commence your drive to Ramathra. En route stop at Fatehpur Sikri. Fatehpur Sikri, a city capital built by Emperor Akbar to honour a Sufi saint, Salim Chisti, is perhaps the best preserved vestige of the Mughal Empire. The city complex includes palaces, pools, public audience halls, mosques and other places of worship, and (you guessed it) tombs! An excavation at Fatehpur Sikri in 2000 also unearthed an older Jain city that must have existed before the 11th Century. On arrival at Ramathra, check into your hotel, the Ramathra Fort. Have the rest of the day at leisure followed by dinner at the hotel. The following day after breakfast you will have a day exploring Ramathra. Explore temples followed by a visit on foot to a local village. Meet villagers and see their homes as they tend small plots in the fertile valley or herd cattle on the Daang scrub. Several stops are planned when crossing the Daang for photography and wild life spotting. In the evening, enjoy a boat ride on a nearby lake.
