Cult Triangle, Wasgamuwa & Gal Oya

This fabulous trip combines three of Sri Lanka's national parks as well as exploring the cultural riches of Sigiriya and environs. Sigiriya is the perfect base in the Cultural Triangle with plenty of time factored in for also visiting Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla.

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, however the optimum time to see leopard and other park wildlife is from March to October.

In August and September there's an opportunity to witness 'The Gathering' - the largest aggregation of wild Asian Elephants at Minneriya.

‘The Gathering’ sees herds of elephants journey to the park’s vast reservoir to quench their thirst and take shelter under the trees. Nowhere else in the world can you see so many wild Asian elephants socialising and moving together; it is not unusual to see as many as 300 elephants in a single afternoon!

Explorers Against Extinction works to raise awareness as well as funds for specific conservation projects. By enquiring and booking through this site you will be supporting conservation. On behalf of all confirmed clients, Explorers Against Extinction receives a donation.

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1-3

The Cultural Triangle
After an early breakfast visit the rock fortress of Sigiriya – one of Sri Lanka’s seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. Early-risers may wish to beat the crowds with a pre-breakfast climb and, in this instance, your hotel will provide a breakfast box which you can enjoy in the shadow of the rock. In the late afternoon visit the rock fortress of Sigiriya – one of Sri Lanka’s seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. By visiting at this time of day you'll avoid the heat and crowds. The following day visit Minneriya National Park for a safari drive with one of the park's expert rangers. The park is home to 24 species of mammal, including sambar & spotted deer, leopard, sloth bear & toque monkey. The star of the show is the elephant, with approximately 200 living in the park. Wardens from Minneriya, and neighbouring national parks, monitor the elephants' whereabouts on a constant basis, ensuring a high chance of sightings. Your final day in Sigiriya provides an opportunity to visit the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa: a UNESCO World Heritage site built over one thousand years ago alongside the spectacular, carefully-engineered reservoirs that provide the region's water to this day.

Wasgamuwa National Park
Travel into the depths of Wasgamuwa National Park, home to a wide variety of wildlife including the cherished Asian elephant. Learn more about the conflict between humans and elephants in rural parts of the country at the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society. With a strong focus on conservation, research and ecosystem protection, this organisation strives to help local people and wildlife co-exist peacefully through community-based projects.  Spend the morning visiting a rural village, seeing first hand some of the practices put in place to deter elephants from raiding crops, and learning how the conservation society is helping local people diversify their income. Their holistic approach balances the needs of the wildlife with those of the growing rural communities, so future generations have the knowledge to help protect this beautiful area.  Afterwards, enjoy a traditional lunch in the village and gain insight into the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.  During the afternoon, spend time with the team at the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society. Learn about the elephants who make their home within the national park and the issues they face in the day-to-day conflicts with humans and rural development. As you travel through the jungle, your guide will explain some of the education methods they use and conservation challenges they face, while you keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of an elephant amongst the trees. There are no captive elephants here, so if you are lucky enough to spot one you know they are roaming freely in their natural habitat.

DAY 5-6

Gal Oya National Park
Morning drive to Gal Oya. In the late afternoon head into the national park with your naturalist for a jeep safari. Herds of deer, many species of birds and peacocks are among the wildlife that can be spotted and if you are lucky you may spot the occasional elephant. As darkness falls return to the lodge for dinner. The following day depart the lodge and drive into Gal Oya National Park for a boat safari on the Senanayake Samudra reservoir. You will be accompanied by a naturalist who will help you identify the many species of birds you are likely to encounter. Keep a look out for elephants that come to the banks in search of water. During the dry season, when the levels in the reservoir are low, elephants have occasionally been seen wading between the islands in search of food. The boat is open top so we recommend taking a hat and sun block with you.
